The Stimulus Package of
2008 Offers Big Breaks to Businesses – The economic stimulus package passed by Congress benefits businesses as well as individuals.  This legislation includes two provisions that would benefit businesses. The first raises the dollar amount of limits on expensing to $250,000.  The second allows for a one-year depreciation deduction of 50 percent of the cost of the property, in addition to regular depreciation on the remaining cost.  Normally HVAC systems are depreciated over a very long period of time (15 to 20 years), which does not provide much of a tax break to the purchaser.  With the new bonus depreciation, businesses can now recover over 50% of the cost of the system in the first year.  And small businesses may be able to deduct the entire cost of the system in Year 1.  To qualify systems must be put into service prior to January 1, 2009.

Accelerated Expensing:
A business owner wants to replace an old chiller, which would cost about $200,000.  Before the new law, the business could expense only the first $128,000 of the purchase price.  Now they can write-off the entire purchase price (up to the new $250,000 limit).  The deduction is allowed even if the purchase price is financed in whole or in part.
